Project Background

In June 2024, K-Home received an inquiry from a Philippine client for a prefabricated steel structure building. The client intended to construct a warehouse building of approximately 500 square meters for cargo turnover and storage, with clear requirements for the building’s spatial layout, functional practicality, and special load-bearing capacity.

Spatial Design Requirements

The client has provided a sketch, specifying that the building should adopt a single-slope, single-span structure with a span of 25 meters and a length of 20 meters. The single-slope design must balance rainwater drainage and compatibility with the installation angle of photovoltaic panels to be mounted later.

Functional Configuration Requirements

Designed as a temporary storage space, the building is required by the client to only have a roof structure with no surrounding walls. The open layout allows multi-directional cargo access, improves loading and unloading efficiency, and cuts down on construction costs and timelines.

Key Issues Review in the Early Project Stage

Upon receiving the customer’s inquiry for warehouse construction, we immediately launched technical communication and professionally addressed and optimized the core issues from both sides.

In the internal design phase, we carefully reviewed the customer’s sketch and identified a key flaw: the 25-meter-span warehouse had two extra rows of internal columns. Per steel structure design standards, buildings with spans under 30 meters require no additional columns—redundant ones drastically reduce space utilization. The customer explained they added the columns due to limited steel structure experience and conventional construction awareness, with no specific functional needs. We proposed optimizing by removing the redundant columns, maximizing usable space while ensuring structural safety, which the customer approved.

Regarding roof photovoltaic (PV) panel installation: given the Philippines’ hurricane-prone climate (risk of panels being damaged or blown away), we initially advised against it. The customer emphasized the local terrain’s uniqueness—most surrounding buildings have PV panels with mature applications—and insisted on the demand. We will later optimize the fixing scheme based on local conditions to balance practicality and safety.

For foundation treatment, the customer initially planned helical piles. Our engineers noted their limitations: suitable only for small-load sheds, with strict requirements (wind speed <80km/h, column spacing <4.6m, span <5m) that mismatch the project’s needs. With our professional analysis, the customer accepted switching to anchor bolts—laying a solid foundation for structural stability.

Design Proposal

After resolving early-stage core issues, the K-home design team responded promptly. Based on the customer’s sketch, and integrating the lightweight, high-strength advantages of steel structures and local Philippine climate conditions, we efficiently finalized the warehouse’s floor and elevation drawings in just half a workday—clearly showing the overall appearance and key structural details. The design focused on three core optimizations: In terms of roof design, to meet the customer’s demand for installing photovoltaic panels later, structural engineers prioritized strengthening the roof load-bearing capacity. High-strength roof steel beams and purlins were adopted to greatly enhance the roof’s load-bearing performance, laying a solid foundation for the safe installation and long-term operation of the photovoltaic panels. Meanwhile, the roof slope was set at 7%—this angle not only satisfies the rapid drainage needs during local rainy weather, effectively avoiding water accumulation risks, but also ensures the neat and aesthetic appearance of the roof.

For the maintenance structure design, we strictly followed the customer’s requirement of “only installing the roof maintenance structure without walls”. High-quality color steel plates were selected as the main roof material, which boast excellent waterproof, anti-corrosion and thermal insulation properties, making them well-suited to the local environment and able to extend the building’s service life. In addition, gutters and downspouts were specially installed along the roof edges to ensure timely and smooth rainwater discharge, preventing water accumulation from corroding and damaging the roof through structural design.

Upon completion of the initial design plan, we sent it to the customer for confirmation at the earliest opportunity. We then made targeted optimizations and improvements based on the customer’s feedback on detailed adjustments, and finally reached a consensus to finalize the drawings.

Project Achievements

Fast and Efficient Drawing Design & Delivery

After sorting out all core issues in the early stage, the K-home design team finished the warehouse’s floor and elevation drawings in just half a workday, way faster than the usual speed in the industry. The drawings clearly show what the warehouse looks like and its key structural details, saving a lot of time for the later construction work. This fully reflects how professional and efficient our steel structure building design is.

Design Solution Perfectly Meets Needs

To meet the customer’s main requirement of installing photovoltaic panels on the roof later, we used high-strength steel beams and purlins to make the roof strong enough to bear weight. This ensures the panels can be installed and used safely. We also set the roof slope at a scientific 7%, which not only helps rainwater drain quickly but also keeps the roof looking neat and good.

Following the customer’s request of “only building a roof, no walls”, we chose high-quality color steel plates for the roof. These plates are great at waterproofing, anti-corrosion and heat preservation, perfectly fitting the local climate in the Philippines. We also added gutters and downspouts to the roof edges, making sure rainwater can flow away in time to protect the roof.

From figuring out problems in the early stage to improving the design plan, we focused on structural safety and practical use the whole time. We removed the extra columns to make the warehouse space more usable, changed the foundation plan to make the building more stable, and optimized the roof design to fit photovoltaic panel installation.
